An effective mathematical modeling of human motion is crucial for the assessment of exercise programs, especially for rehabilitation treatments. Furthermore, it remains an open issue to identify the incorrect execution of prescribed physical movements as well as provide motion performance evaluation. In this paper, we propose a novel framework for online quantitative human motion assessment, intending to provide identification of improper movements. We employ covariance descriptors as a means to capture spatial information and temporal evolution for the joints of the human body. The correct movements of the exercise are characterized by estimating a Wishart distribution on the space of covariance matrices. As a test sample performs the prescribed exercise, an online density estimation approach provides the ability to approximate a second Wishart distribution of the test sample. Hence, improper movements are detected based on the resulting dissimilarity values. Three public data sets are used to validate our framework, and we demonstrate that our framework can identify different levels of non-optimal performance based on incorrect postures and motion intensity.

The increased environmental awareness increases the demand for sustainable building materials. Wood is for a number of reasons the first choice. Fibreboards made from sawdust, branches, or crown wood are indispendable materials as they are strong and very little prone to dimensional changes due to temperature or moisture. To be fully sustainable, these materials require alternative flame retarders and binders. As a first step into this direction, we present our initial results with protein hydrolysates made from poultry-feather waste for the preparation of flame-retardant fibreboards. Impregnated wood fibres show a significantly decreased decomposition rate and delayed ignition. At a total protein content of approx. 10 wt-%, plates produced in the “wet” process are self-extinguishing and show the very little subsequent smouldering. The mechanical properties are comparable to commercial fibreboard reaching 15 N/mm2 in 3-point bending tests. As these boards are based solely on natural materials, they can be shredded and composted at the end of their life-cycle.
